Where is Maamigili?
Maamigili is a local island in Alif Dhaal (South Ari) Atoll, about 107 km southwest of Malé in the Maldives. It sits beside the South Ari Marine Protected Area, which is why it is known as the Whale Shark Island.
How do you get to Maamigili?
The simplest way is a domestic flight from Malé (MLE) to Villa International Airport Maamigili (VAM), which takes about 25 minutes and is operated by Maldivian and flyme. You can also arrive by speedboat, arranged through your guesthouse, or by public ferry from other islands in South Ari Atoll. No seaplane is required.
When can you see whale sharks in Maamigili?
Year-round. Maamigili Beyru, just off the island's coast, is part of the South Ari Marine Protected Area — one of the only places on earth where whale sharks gather in every season rather than on a migration window.
Do you need to be a diver to see the whale sharks?
No. The reef at Maamigili Beyru slopes from about 5 to 15 metres, so whale sharks are regularly seen by snorkellers and swimmers of all experience levels, not only by certified divers.
